Hacienda La Puente Unified Board of Education Set to Approve Election Conversion on March 12

CITY OF INDUSTRY – Hacienda La Puente Unified’s Board of Education is inviting community members to provide input at a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 12 on plans to shift from at-large elections to a by-trustee area system.

The meeting – to be held at 15959 E. Gale Ave., City of Industry – is the last in a series of gatherings launched Jan. 21 when the board decided to shift to the new format in compliance with the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA).

Under the current at-large system, all registered voters may vote for any board candidate. Under the new system, residents will vote for a single candidate residing in their trustee area.

“This effort is designed to ensure all members of our community have a strong voice in our elections,” Interim Superintendent Annie Bui said. “We hope everyone who has expressed an opinion joins us for this last, incredibly important meeting.”

The district has gathered more than 1,100 comments about the shift through an online survey, four public hearings, five public meetings, emails and phone calls. Seven conceptual maps have been proposed, including one based on community views, as well as a table of options for the election sequence.

After a public hearing on the potential maps and election sequences on March 12, the board is set to pick a map, select an election sequence, approve the conversion to the by-trustee-area election system and approve submission of a petition to the Los Angeles County Committee on School District Organization seeking approval of the map choice and election conversion. The first election under the new system is expected be in November 2020.

Questions or comments may be made via a CVRA Hotline at or directed to the office of Superintendent Bui at (626) 934-4848.
